Devlog #7: First Draft Complete

Progress Updates

A whole lot's been done since last update! Most of the recent additions have been content, so we're looking at:

  • More items
  • More skills
  • More enemies
  • More art
  • And a bunch of UI polish

But most importantly...

Story From Beginning to End

The story of South of the March is complete! It's a first draft, of course, so there's more to do, but the whole thing now progresses (and is playable) from start to finish, including both narration and dialogue. I tend to do a lot of revising and rewriting while working my way through initial drafts, so it's likely more finished than "first draft" usually implies. Either way, it's a big milestone.

The only thing still missing in terms of writing are the side quests. I intend to include a handful in the finished game, probably about 4-6, but the planned design (non-missable, independent from the main story) and ideas so far allow for enough flexibility that I think it makes sense to hold off on them until the main game is a bit more ironed out.

Next Steps

There's still more content to add (items, skills, etc) along with the gameplay balancing that goes with it, but the big pieces still in progress are:

  • Continuing Art - We're about halfway through on art assets, and a lot obviously couldn't progress until writing was complete, so there's not really any news here. It's moving along as expected, but will still take some time.
  • Starting Sound - This is still the biggest glaring missing piece. I'll likely move on to this very soon, but it's new territory for me, so I don't have a great idea of what kind of time frame to expect for it. Once I get rolling with it, I'll do at least one devlog devoted entirely to this.

Keep an eye out! We're getting there!
