Devlog #15: Demo Plans & Additional Platforms
Progress Updates
Most of the work over the last few weeks has been dedicated to:
- More fleshing out of skills
- Filling out early content
Most of this has had to do with cleaning up and fleshing out the early content in the game (basically everything in the first half or so). I've set a somewhat arbitrarily dividing line for "polish" there mostly because I'd like to get a playable demo version up to get general feedback, have blind players try out accessibility features, and get a sense if there are any major changes to be made before finishing out the rest.
Demo Plans
To that end, I'm hoping to get a demo working sooner than later.
I'm planning for this to be a kind of pre-alpha demo, because there will be features missing and placeholder assets (especially in the menus), though it should feel relatively complete in terms of the core gameplay. There's still a bit of art to be done for that, as well as finalizing items and skills so that there can be at least a rudimentary balance to the combat and character progression at the start.
No planned date yet, but hopefully soon. I'll publish the demo here first, but that brings me to the next point.
Additional Platforms
I also intend to publish this on Steam. I don't have a Steam page up right now, and I'm pretty sure I should've had one a long time ago, but hey, what can you do? Most of the Conventional Wisdom I can find online points to getting things a little more organized professionally before I do that, like putting in paperwork for a proper LLC or DBA because it's hard to move things around on Steam after the fact. I'm dragging my feet on that out of general uncertainty over which I should do, and the fact that there is some cost (fairly low in my state, at least) for an LLC.
The idea of starting and maintaining a single-person LLC feels somewhat like overkill for this. Beyond that, a part of me simply does not believe that that's what most indie developers are actually doing on Steam. Consult a lawyer, you say? Ha! Anyway, here's my Patreon.
Regardless, that's probably what I'll do. I just need to finally make up my mind.
In Conclusion
Keep an eye out for new developments, in this order:
- A demo on here
- A Steam page for wishlisting
- A demo on the Steam page!
Whatever I end up doing in terms of LLC/DBA , I'll write up another devlog on my experience with that process, as it's been frustratingly difficult to find people talking about this outside of vague hypotheticals. General advice is one thing, and obviously nothing any random person says is particularly legally meaningful, but I'd love to have a better idea of what people actually do.
