Devlog #5: Character Portrait Styles

The last couple of weeks have been busy, but we've still made progress! A lot of it has been behind-the-scenes work on the player menus where the bulk of your character customization, inventory management, and things like that take place, but we'll look at that in a later devlog.

One small change we've made -- small depending on your perspective, I guess, given that it involved changing all the character art in the game so far -- involves updating dialogue portraits to include shoulders. Previously, most were focused almost exclusively on the face, which limited our options a bit and resulted in some confusing proportions at times, so we restyled a bit so that things like height differences and relative scale will be clearer from character to character. Basically, something like this:

Becomes more like this:

And at the same time, we've got more NPCs in development, too:

Over the new few weeks, we'll be working a lot on scene illustrations and menu functionality. We're getting fairly close to a point where most of the work will be filling out content (writing and art, as well as gameplay balance) rather than working on the technical skeleton of the game. Of course we'll still be doing a lot of polishing and moving things around, like these character portraits, but once we hit that point, I expect these devlogs will get a bit more into detailed feature explanations as well.

I like the change!  They look a little more grounded in the frame with the shoulders included.
